HP Windows XP New HDD Partition Not Found!!

Help - I have a HP computer and the HDD died. .. so I replaced it.. and the
recovery fails...citing that it cant find the parition..

how do I work around this? can i use my frens home edition win xp with the
cd key (its home edition too) that is pasted on my computer?

its out of warranty too..

that's because HP supply a hidden partition to enable the recovery of your
OS - the cheapskates.

No. AFAIK HP OEM installs are tied to HP - ie they are not generic OEMs. You
have two choices I think.
One, to buy a retail copy of XP, or two, to investigate a free alternative
OS such as Ubuntu. (http://www.ubuntu.com)

Sorry, you're screwed. (And millions of others are in the same
position, with a ticking time bomb.)

You may think you bought a copy of Windows, but it was never really
yours, legally. Your computer manufacturer elected to save a few
cents by giving you no way to recover if your hard drive dies -- and
Microsoft's licensing terms allow this.

About all I can suggest is call HP and throw yourself on their mercy
(*) to get a copy of Windows on a CD-ROM. Otherwise you'll have to
buy one at retail.

Time to buy a real XP CD.
