HP Photosmart 7960 Printer Causes Random Reboots

I recently installed an HP Photosmart 7960 printer on my
Windows XP computer using a USB 1.0 cable. This has
caused the PC to randomly reboot whenever the printer
cable is connected. When I disconnect the USB cable, the
problem ceases. When I turn the automatic reboot feature
off, I get a blue screen with the following error message:
Stop: 0x4000080
Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete

I then have to reboot the PC manually.

I'm not able to use the PC and new printer together in
this condition. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hey. I hope I'm not too late.

My Dad's Windows 2000 Pro would not boot because of a blue screen.
Incredibly, for maybe the first time I've seen, I was able to use safe
mode. I spent roughly 8 hours arguing with HP tech support. For the
entire time, through two first-level techs and supposedly a couple of
level-two techs and even a "supervisor", they blamed either me or
Microsoft (mostly MS). They would not, for one minute, entertain the
idea that it was their problem. I finally gave up, planning to do a
restore and returning the printer. I've found time and time again
that HP is useless for support.

I suspected the USB card at one point and took it out. Bingo. The HP
software jammed up my Compact (ironically) USB pci card. I put my
mouse in the ps2 port and the printer in the built-in USB port and
after overcoming a couple of more buggy issues with the printing
software install I succeeded. I don't buy HP products because of past
issues with their hardware and tech support but my Dad had his heart
set on this printer.

This happened in the last 24 hours.

I've forwarded a copy of this thread with the case number and the
"supervisor's" name listed below to HP Support so that someone else
may be saved from having to deal with them.

Case# 73064912
Supervisor: Michelle
