HP Pavilion DV8310CA's Quick Launch Buttons won't work in Vista

I bought a HP Pavilion DV8310CA Lapyop that came with Windows XP Home, and I
wanted to upgrade to Windows Vista. Everything installed ok and I was able to
get the drivers for it and they worked....all except one. It seems that HP's
Quick Launch Button Service and Control Panel Applete won't install on
windows vista Ultimate. i have gone through several steps to try and get it
to work, even talked to Tech support people, and still it's a no-go. I'm at a
loss as to what to do. can anyone help me with this?

The only option you get in Vista is the preprogramed Launch QuickPlay and DVD
buttons assigned by the program. If you have installed QuickPlay you will
also note pressing one of the QuickLaunch buttons when Powered off boots the
computer and starts QuickPlay. That is how it works on either the factory
setups for new Vista computers or upgraded systems. Hope this answers your
question.

Pressing either the DVD or QuickPlay button does nothing as there is no
control panel applet to tell the buttons what to launch.

Do you have current QuickLaunch Buttons sp34236.exe installed for dv8000
series? Do you have Current version of QuickPlay 3.4 v.4406 installed? If you
do this they should work. I am running a dv8300CTO with Vista Ultimate and
all work as they are supposed to in Vista. QuickPlay has been working
starting with 3.0 since May and I upgraded from XP Pro back in February. Hope
this helps. By the way there will be no CP applet in Vista as the buttons are
no longer programable with Vista versions.

I have the latest version, but for some reason, the buttons don't launch
anything when my laptop is on and all they do when I press them when it's off
is start the thing.

You do not say if the Vista version of QuickPlay is installed and whether or
not you can start it manually.

Here is something that a Tech Support person from HP wrote to me: "I would
like to inform you that the operating system which is installed
on your notebook is not an OEM version. As the Quick play buttons and
DVD buttons on the notebook will work on OEM version of operating
system. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for
your patience."

That is just plain stupid.

You still did not indicate if QuickPlay actually works on your computer? If
it did, did you run the update feature and at what version is it updated to.?

I know these are oversights by you, but are really necessary to try and help
you.

I am running QLB ver 6.10 rev C sp34236.exe and QPW 3.4 v. 4406 Initially
installed from sp35813.exe (QPW 3.20A which was updated to 3.3 v.4222 in QPW
program, then later on updated to QPW 3.4 v. 4406 when notified bt QPW it was
available).

If you do not have these then uninstall both QLB and QPW. Then install The
QLB sp34236.exe first. Then Install QPW 3.20A sp35813.exe. Then run update
from inside QPW. You can get them from this site just search down until you
find the group then select and search down for the sp number you need. You
can read the .txt or .html if you want but you can use them and they do work
correctly for me.

ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/

I am running an Intel machine, but if yours is an AMD I can not see why it
still would not work. The only thing that could get in the way is the
difference in BIOS.
I think I have covered what is necessary if it is going to work. I do not
recall if you ever mentioned what version of Vista you are running. That
could impact you also. I run Vista Ultimate which has the Media Center
funtions also and QuickPlay works with it for playing DVDs etc.

Hope this info is helpful.

I have Quick Launch 6.30 REV. B and Quickplay 3.20 REV. A. Quickplay works if
i start it from the Start menu, but doesn't if I press the Quick Launch
Button. I was told be a Tech Sipport person that the reason it doesn't work
is because I ahve a retail version of Vista instead of an OEM version. The
Quick Launch buttons program was made for just OEM versions.

Well they are wrong! My computer came with XP Pro 1 year ago and I upgraded
with Vista Ultimate in February when it was first available. So as you can
see it is not an OEM setup. I did not use their upgrade programs or anthing
related to HP to upgrade it. I, like you, bought a retail version. Try
uninstalling QPW and QLB using the Control Panel Programs and Features. Then
install the Software packages I suggested before.

If you remember the SP numbers they had you install write them down and then
delete their folder in SWSETUP folder on your OS drive. The information I
gave previously is available under HP Software and drivers support download
page for the dv9000 CTO. I checked it out and they use the QPW and QLB with
AMD processors so apparently it should work on yours also.

I would at least upgrade to QLB VER 6.10 REV C on the QLB software as it is
for Vista, QLB VER 6.10 REV B is for XP. That probably is a real problem in
itself. Also why have you not upgraded from 3.2 to 3.4 in QPW? Last I believe
nothing HP Support has ever told me as they have always been dead wrong. They
can not even Identify my computer and it's components correctly when asked.
Be sure to uninstall either or both programs before installing either or both
of the ones I suggested you use!

Have a nice day!

Sorry about my mistake on the QLB version you are using I did not have it on
screen when I was responding previously. That is the latest version you have,
but not for the dv8300 series. I would still try the one I am using mainly
because I know it works on the dv8300 series with the version of QuickPlay
you are using.

I have done a little research on QLB 6.30 B it is for a Compaq Tablet Laptop
with Vista. It has apparently some ability (According to the instructions,
which many times are incorrect) to program it's buttons. You obviously do not
have a Tablet PC. I checked several other models similar to ours and they all
use QLB Ver. 6.10 C as their latest software.

I can't seem to be able to find the QBL 6.30 B nor QuickPlay 3.4 v.4406. Can
you provide links to them so i can see if they work?

OK, Here we go.
You said you had QuickLaunch Buttons 6.30 B installed.
You need to uninstall the program first. This version does not work with
regular laptops, only tablet laptops. I am quite sure this is your problem!

Install QuickLaunch Buttons 6.10 C sp34236.exe. This can be found at this
link.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1842189&os=2093&lang=en

You said you already have QuickPlay 3.20 A installed.
Start QuickPlay up and click on the DVD icon. Then on the left side of the
screen select the Update icon (the Icon just below the Microphone Icon and
above the QuickPlay Icon) by double clicking it. The Icon for UPDATE looks
like the QuickPlay one only rotated 90 degrees to the right. Arrow head
points up.

If it does not offer you the option to update the program you may need to
uninstall QuickPlay Program and install it from this link. sp35813.exe
(QuickPlay web update).

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1842189&os=2093&lang=en

Last after you get everything installed you can customize the Main Menu to
show the other Icons you need to use. Like TV if you have it WebCam etc. The
way to do this is select the DVD Icon and then select the "i" Icon (either
one). Then select "Custom Menu" and move the Icons you want to show from the
box on the left to the one on the right using the proper buttons on the
screen.

Hopefully after all this it will work for you. Let me know how it goes.
