Any advice on getting an HP Laserjet 4L to work with Win XP? The printer
works fine, but even after loading the drivers from HP I can't get it to
work
with a WIN XP.

Thanks.

Try using the generic Laserjet driver that comes with window xp, or the
laserjet 5L driver, they normally work.

When I got a new computer with WinXP in May 2004, my HP Laser Jet 1012 (only
perhaps 6 months old at the time) wouldn't work. Seems there was a (known)
glitch with MS and XP and HP. I went out of town for several months, and
they must have gotten it fixed because when I returned, a patient HP
technician finally (by phone) got it working again for me. Have you
contacted HP? I don't know if that same sort of glitch would be affecting
your Laser Jet 4L or not.

That seems a contradiction. .

Do *NOT* try to use HP drivers downloaded from them. Use the ones with
the system. Printers and Faxes, Add New printer, select Local
Printer(do not check Automatic install), select the LPT1 port for it, in
the list of drivers, HP and the one for Laserjet 4L (Microsoft Windows
XP or HP - I use the HP ones there without trouble, but if you have any
try the MS ones)

Did you install the entire HP bloatware or just the printer driver using
Add Printer Wizard? As others have said, the driver included in XP
should be sufficient. HP makes good printers but lousey software.

Also, have you tried a different printer cable?

HP 4L is no longer supported by HP Tech Support. It will cost you to haver
this problem fixed.

Also - how is your computer connected to your computer? If using the
parrallel connection, it MUST be connected directly to the computer
and not through another device that has a "pass-through" port
in-between the computer and the printer. XP doesn't support the
pass-through ports and will only recognize the first device in that
sort of connection.

The 4L works just fine with XP. You don't even have to install the
drivers yourself; XP will find/install the drivers for your printer
all by itself. I've used a 4L since it was new, still have it, and it
works with zero problems in XP. It's very slow compared to today's
laser printers, but at home I'm not in that big of a hurry.

Wow, same here, just gave it to another, bot a multi-function.

The 4L still works great, has great output. I remember paying over $600 for
it new...whew.

Likewise. It is just coming to its eleventh birthday, has given no
trouble, adequate for a modest load, *and* has only just needed its
cartridge replaced for the first time. It is easy to get mesmerised by
printer speeds that are not really needed. Resolution is adequate for
letters and documents - use a deskjet for other things
