hp laserjet 4 plus toner problem

I have 2 old Hp laserjet 4 Plus printers. One tends to wrinkle the
paper. The other is/was our primary printer until the toner cartridge
started to leak. It leaves toner in piles in the cartridge, on the
rollers and on the paper (in wide verticle streaks). We've cleaned out
the cartridge and printer repeatedly. The same cartridge works fine in
the backup printer. The toner mess used to happen every couple of
months but now will only print a page or two before leaking. Any
ideas? We are willing to canibilize if needed.

Thanks

If the toner cartridge is actually leaking, then one would expect it to
be faulty; however, you say that it works fine in the other printer. So,
perhaps it's delivering toner and it's not adhering to the drum properly
- what is the print quality like? I'd expect it to be faint. Could be
the transfer roller or the high voltage power supply.

The other printer. Explain more about the wrinkled paper. May be easier
to fix.

Print density is fine. We get a streak that starts out light (verticle
in the middle of the paper) it gets darker on each paper through. We've
just spent 20 minutes cleaning out the printer.

The other printer wrinkles the end of the paper and doesn't feed from
the front manual load door (we're doing labels today).

Hmm. Might be worth changing over the transfer roller. But easiest to
look at other one first.

Swop over the paper output units between the printers. Takes about 10-15
mins for working on the pair. Email me for instructions. That should fix
the trailing end concertina. The front manual load door problems is
probably fixed by changing over the pickup roller and pad. Again, I can
send details.
