Is the paper folded or creased? If creased is the crease between (about) 2 to 6
inches long and run at a slight angle down the page?
If it is an actual fold there may be an obstruction in the paper path between
the lower tray (Tray 2) and the registration assembly, the paper takes a
slightly different path than it does from the MP tray (Manual feed tray).
Feeding a piece of light card from the lower tray may clear the obstruction
otherwise cover removal and some dissasembly is required.
If creased there are several causes.
The common ones are-
Paper quality, laser printers are just as picky about paper as inkjets but for
entirely different reasons. As a generalisation the cheaper the paper the more
clay is in it, clay absorbs water from the atmosphere and whilst the paper may
not feel damp it can cause paper issues in laser printers, also it should be
stored away from concrete floors and outside walls in a dry room. If in doubt
try a known quality brand of paper. People are often very reluctant to accept
that the paper they use is an issue, the only way to persuade them is to use a
known good quality paper and prove the point. HP has a media document that
covers paper types and recommendations that is simply huge. The paper path from
the lower tray is more demanding on paper than it is from the MP tray.

Paper guides, make sure the paper guides in the tray are set exactly right for
your paper size, if they are out even a little it can cause paper feed problems.

The pick up roller in the printer body and the separation pad in the tray
itself (a brownish pad about 1 1/2 inches long and 1/3 inch wide at the front
of the tray) may be worn causing uneven feeding. Both are cheap and easy to
replace for the lower tray.

Finally, if none of those things are the cause the tray may need replacement,
this is not common but happens with some laser printers (the laserjet 4+ does
this and I have seen it on one or two occasions with the 2100), there is no fix
other than tray replacement. Even experienced printer techs find this hard to
diagnose because the tray has so few parts but I think it is something to do
with the spring system in the tray. This condition is rare and the best way to
prove it is to use a tray from another 2100 (or 2200) and see if it fixes the
problem.

thanks tony, the crease is just like rounded corners at the top right
hand corner, like slightly folded over but not creased, it is like
rounded.

L

lavenders19

the crease is only about an inch or two along the top right, along the
top of the page. i will take some paper home from work and see if that
cures it and check paper feed settings.

been around the office and got some 80gsm, 100gsm, and some outer card
used in binding. I will be giving them all a try tonight, and see what
happens.

all going terribly wrong. put a screwdriver next to the spring and it
has come off the bar that connects the fiddly black piece that fell off
in the first place.

anyone know what i can do???

Now I'm confused. Are you talking about the 250 sheet tray or the multipurpose
tray (the one that folds down)?
In both cases they use a roller to pick up the paper (it has a "D" or almost
elyptical cross section).
Or are you talking about the light brown pad that is part of the lower tray?
Can you try to explain exactly where this bar is and what it looks like?

hi tony. it was the pickup bar for the 250sheet tray. when i turned
the printer upside down after removing the tray, i saw some fluff on
the right hand side. this was causing the problem. i brushed off what
i could but had this idea to remove the screws to clean further. i
thought it just lifted off, but realised it had to be moved to the left
hand side. next to the paper pickup roller was a black plastic piece
which fell out. when i managed to get this back in, the bar linked to
the cog mechanism held by a spring came out of place i think and the
spring came off.

when reassembled the paper pickup wouldn't work. i had to remove bits
and pieces to try and get to the cog mechanism going but this just made
things worse, didn't know how many cogs made a printer work and once
removed i was stuffed.

In the end, now I have a messed up printer *G*, all in pieces that is
totally nacked. I will attempt to look for another similar one on ebay
now, as i have 2 full printer cartridges for it *lol*.

Oh well, we live and learn, the moral of the story, don't strip down a
printer...clean without removing parts and you will be fine.

Thanks for your help Tony.

Unlucky, mate. But, after all, that is the logic underlying the ol'

i dont think it can be saved Tony. In the end, frustration took it's
toll and when the cog shielding wouldn't come off, it was forced off,
which didn't help matters. Didn't realise how complicated the cog
system was.

The only reason i'm going for the same printer again is because i have
2 full toner cartridges.

Thanks for all your help Tony, but i think this one is destined for
spares. I will keep the tray, memory for my new printer. Are there
any other bits i should hang on to?

I would keep the fuser and the laser scanner.
You can download the service manual for the Laserjet 2200 (not the 2100) for
instructions to take the printer apart.
Download the six files

http://www.eserviceinfo.com/downloadsm/2623/HP_Laser Jet 2200.html
Run part 1 and extract the service manual.
This is not the 2100 manual and some of the parts in the two printers are
different.
There is one less cable connector on the 2100 fuser, the manual will refer to 4
connectors (the 2100 only has 3).
The instructions for cover removal etc. are the same for both printers.
If you want to you could keep the Formatter and the Engine Control Assembly,
very little else is worth keeping.

thanks tony. i will remove the fuser and laser assemblies. Is there a
service manual available for the HP Laserjet 2100?

ok tony,emailed you.

I have taken my old computer apart today. Removed the toner, 250sheet
pickup roller, memory, 250 sheet tray, laser assembly and fuser
assembly.

Nothing else useful worth keeping?

Got a new HP laserjet 2100 off fleabay for £20. Hopefully this will
work properly and i can think of the £20 as an engineers fee for
cleaning my original printer *LOL*

I didn't get an e-mail from you.
Did you use (e-mail address removed) ?
If your new printer needs any parts you have a good source, right?
Since you have removed the covers you might as well keep the formatter, ECA
(main board), and maybe other parts.
When you get the new printer see what page count it has (Press both buttons
simultaneously to get a status page).

good idea tony. i won't throw away my old printer yet until i have got
my new one and done a status test.

Thanks for the 2100 manual. Now realised where I went wrong in
removing the pickup roller. I was meant to go in from the side and
remove the cog. It then lifts out directly. I didn't remove the cog
and had to remove it an an angle.

i will update when new printer has been picked up.

L

lavenders19

ok tony. picked up my printer today. Ran a status print and the page
count is 121,610. Seems like a lot. What is the life on these
printers?

Also on the right hand side there is a status log with code 50013 every
500 or so pages. what is this?

This printer seems to work ok. good printing so £20 wasn't bad. It
also includes some toner (genuine hp toner cartridge). How can i tell
how much is in it?

Thanks in advance.
