I bought an HP JetDirect 300X Print Server on EBay, and it didn't come
with a power adaptor. Next to the power jack it says '9-35 VDC Input'
then something that looks like (-)-(o-(+), where the plus and minus
signs are inside circles instead of parentheses. The Ebay seller
tells me
"Power Device Power adapter - external Voltage Required AC 220/240 V (
50 Hz )" but that doesn't mean much to me.
The people at Radio Shack tried a 9-volt power adaptor, but it didn't
work. Suggestions?

Thanks,
Roy

Did they try it configured correctly? That + and - tell you whether the
outer sheath is to be positive or negative (or, conversely whether the
pin in the middle is + or -. If you get it wrong, the device won't work
(and might be destroyed tho probably not.) The AC 220/240V 50Hz figures
just mean that if you are in England instead of the US that's the sort
of adapter you would use. In N America the adapter would say 110/120V 60Hz

Probably should be tried with an adapter that puts out a lot more than 9
volts DC. A 9 volt adapter will generally supply less than 9V when in
use. Say the RS adapter was putting out 8V; the 300X might not work in
that case.

I don't recall whether the 300X has a power switch; if it does, try it
both positions.

Hi Roy !

The post from Bennet has covered most of the bases. I would guess that they
guys at Radio Shack tried a power supply that didn't put out enough current,
probably less than 500ma (500 milli-ampes), was the supply a cube a little
over an inch in size ? You will need one that is about 2" cube. I have the
jetdirect plus 3 and it has a 13V 625ma power supply.

You have 2 choices, use a powersupply that is higher in the range between
9-35V like 13, then you can get away with lower amperage around 650ma. If
you use 9V you need a bigger, physically bigger usually, to deliver the same
power.

example:

My power supply 13 v @ 625ma = 8.13 Watts

If you use 9v to supply a device that requires 8.13Watts the device will
have to deliver 900ma. There are not many off the self 900ma supplies in
Radio Shack. This would almost be a specialty product. Based on the above
logic, I would say the supply you tried at 9volts didn't have enough jam to
make the server start up.

Go back to Radio Shack, get one of their bigger, physically bigger supplies,
it should say 800ma on the front of the package, usually used for powering
portable CD players, turn the voltage switch to 12vots and you should be
fine assuming you get the pin orientation correct.

Hope this helps !

Take Care

Go to HP's parts site..

http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main

I looked and the are about 7 different models of the 300x, all came with a
13 vdc PS module. HP's prices are prety good and it would be the recommended
PS.
