For the HP Scanjet 5590, IE7 disables not only HP Director, but also the
scanner front panel buttons. The above link resolves the HP Director
problem, but not the button problem. Even all the suggestions at

did not fix my front panel button problem. The only solution for me was to
uninstall IE7.

You can run IE 7 and use other HP software that comes with
other scanners. I had used the software that came with an
all-in-one machine. But I uninstalled that yesterday and
re-installed the software for the 5500c scanner I have. My
front buttons and the Director all work just fine.

There are many other scanner front-end options, such as
using MS OFFICE Imaging or OmniPage or Photoshop.

I haven't installed IE7 yet. Still in cue for install.

Are there any problems with Microtek scanners?
Specifically, Microtek Scanmaker X12 USL, runs on the optional scsi port,
not the USB port it will also work on. Using Adaptec 2930CU scsi card.
Using Omnipage 14 here, along with default software that came with the
scanner.
