HP Deskjet 940c - Problem if out of paper in mid print job

I have an HP Deskjet 940c (cxi) on my home PC with Windows XP. I love it,
BUT if it happens to run out of paper in the middle of a print job there is
a problem. It stops and the red light flashes. We put in more paper and hit
the red button. Then it starts printing garbage characters, a few on each
page. It does on and on through many pages of paper.

WHY? Does this happen? It does not happen with other HP printers I have at
work.

This sounds like a communications error. How is the computer connected? You
can cancel a print job by pressing the "X" button on the printer. To recover
from a paper out condition you should be able to refill the paper and then
press the formfeed button to resume printing.

Does it need bi-directional communications toggled?

Aha! To answer the questions first, it was a USB cable connection to the
printer.
The buttons did not work as advertised on the printer in this one and only
case.
And Bob I am very happy with HP.

Someone suggested the printer driver might be corrupted. So I removed the
printer, uninstalled it, deleted all of the driver. I downloaded the driver
from hp and reinstalled it.
Now it works ! HURRAY! Thanks for your input on this issue.
