We recently purchased an hp color laserjet 5550. Each time I use the
postscript printer for adobe indesign, the printer print also ends
printing a blank page and another page with the following: ERROR:
timeout (next line) OFFENDING COMMAND: timeout (two lines down)
STACK: The ps printer will also only print the first page of a print
job, whether the job is multiple copies of the same page or multiple
pages. Any suggestions?

Sounds like the print spooler for whatever operating system you use
isn't sending, and the printer is giving up. Check your driver
configuration. Also check the application to see that it is sending
PostScript that the printer can handle. For many applications, that is
configured by loading a PPD file for the specific printer. Others may
have selections for PostScript Level 1, 2, 3, and such.
The ps printer will also only print the first page of a print
job, whether the job is multiple copies of the same page or multiple
pages. Any suggestions?

Hard to tell from the description. Do you get an error?

Details that would be helpful would be what operating system used and
how the printer is connected.

Hi!

There's something strange going on with Adobe applications. Acrobat 7
Professional does the same thing with certain PostScript printers. The
solution I found (for a Sharp AR-450P) was to enable the "PS Passthru"
setting in printer properties. HP's own printer controls may have a similar
setting. Sharp's context sensitive help said this setting might have to be
used with Adobe applications.

I haven't experienced a failure with a genuine HP printer, so I'm surprised
to hear that you have had problems.

Unfortunately for me, that option was only present in the PC version of the
software, and the Macintosh systems had the same problem.

Jan-

I use a Macintosh, so Postscript was my only option. However people
where I once worked insisted that using Postscript with the HP laser
printers did not work as well as using the HP PCL option on Windows
machines.

It may be necessary to use a different driver, or at least specify PCL
instead of Postscript in the existing driver. If the printer has its
PCL/Postscript option set to "Automatic", it can be used by either type
of driver.
