How do you write powers such as squared or cubed etc in a label?

In math when writing it on a computer I believe it is always written with
the carrat symbol.

2^2
= 2 * 2

2^4
= 2 * 2 * 2 * 2

There are squared and cubed superscript characters : U+00B2 and U+00B3

Much nicer than the old VT format of using ^
