How to upload ? (IE 6.0 SP1)

Just found MSN Groups on-line storage. I have Windows 98 & haven't found a
way to integrate online storage into the file manager. All the "help" I've
seen (IE6 and on-line says "just upload as normal" but nowhere does it ever
explain *how* to upload. I've gone through all the controls in IE and I
don't see anything like "upload". Please advise.

Adding photos or documents to MSN Groups online storage is done through
their web interface - and for photos, they have a special upload tool you
may choose to use. From the online Help on that site:

"If you are using a Windows operating system with either MSN Explorer or
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or later, you can add photos to an album
using the MSN Photo Upload Control. Only managers and members with
permission can add photos to an album.

"Go to the Pictures page. To get there In the left pane, click Pictures.
(If the page you are currently on has no left pane, click Back until you
reach a page that does.) Click Show albums if you see that link directly
below the page title.

"Find the album you want, and then click Add Photos to the far right. (If
you see a page titled “Install the MSN Photo Upload Control,†click Install
to download (To copy programs or other files from the Internet to your
computer.) a special photo-adding tool to your hard disk.) In the file
directory, click a folder, and then click the photos you want to add, or
click Select All to select all thumbnails (A preview of a larger picture.
Thumbnails are small to reduce download time but large enough to provide a
general idea of the full-size image.) in the folder. You will see a check
mark on each selected photo.

"If you want to customize your photos, click Edit Photos and use the set of
photo-editing tools. Click Upload Now."

For documents or other files -

"Is special software necessary to post a document? When you first attempt to
upload a file, Microsoft Internet Explorer and MSN Explorer users are
offered the opportunity to automatically download and install MSN File
Upload Control. This software enables you to upload several files at once.
If you choose not to install File Upload Control, you can still upload
photos and files individually using your browser's standard upload tools."

[The browser's upload tools will be invoked by the web site itself]

"Only managers and members with permission can add a file to Documents
folders. Go to the Documents page. To get there In the left pane, click
Documents. (If the page you are currently on has no left pane, click Back
until you reach a page that does.)

"Click the folder that you want to add a file to. The folder opens.

"Click Add File. Select the check box next to the file you want to add to
Documents. Click Upload Now. "

Jon, thanks for your response. First, I am talking exclusively about
documents. Second, yes, I had already read the help which you have
thoughtfully copied into your post (thanks) and I had chosen *not* to
download more software. Third, I've looked at the page
http://www.msnusers.com/MyStorage.msnw?comm=hgq0p3dfjn4a0j7jub3k8i1v14&type=files
again today and I see a "File Deletion Tool" on the page but I do not see any
indication of any way to add or upload files. You wrote "Adding photos or
documents to MSN Groups online storage is done through their web interface"
What is this "web interface"? Is it Internet Exporer? The OLH says "...you
can still upload photos and files individually using your browser's standard
upload tools." What are these "standard upload tools"? How or where do I
find them? I have looked and haven't seen hide nor hair of them. What am I
doing wrong?

To upload documents, go to your URL - http://groups.msn.com/<groupname>, in
the left menu click on Documents, the at the top under the Documents
heading, click Add File. You'll be taken to a new page where you'll be
required to download and install an ActiveX control to go any further.
You'll note the Info Bar pop-up warning you about this - click on the Info
Bar and then choose Install ActiveX control. A security warning box will
come up, click Install. The ActiveX control will bring up a Windows
Explorer view of your computer where you can navigate to the document you
want to upload. Check the box next to the file you want to upload, then
click the Upload Now button at the top.

I see no other way of uploading documents without accepting this ActiveX
control.

As for photos, when you first create a group and click on Pictures in the
right menu, then click on Add Photos, you'll be taken to a page where you
are offered to install the MSN Photo Upload Control - and that page has more
info on it about the control, and an "Install" button - no automatic
download of the control is offered and no Info Bar pops-up. Click on the
"Add one photo at a time" link under "Do I have to install this control?"
section and you'll be taken to a link like this:
http://groups.msn.com/<username>/shoebox.msnw?action=ReqAddPhotoDownlevel
There you'll be able to click the "Browse" button which will pop up a file
"Save As.." like box where you can then navigate to the picture you want,
click to select, enter any other info, select a size, then click the "Add
Photo link at the bottom. If you cannot get past the page where they are
trying to force you to download the ActiveX control, use the URL above -
note the difference in the action= bit at the end.

BTW, I've found the groups.msn.com domain works better and faster than the
www.msnusers.com one, although I see the URLs switch back and forth at
times, even when you are using that site. Must be some sort of bandwidth or
server balancing going on.

Jon, I have a bad feeling this issue is going to die without being resolved.
I do not see "Documents" on the menu on page
http://www.msnusers.com/MyStorage.msnw. The menu contains "Groups Home", "My
Groups", "My Storage Info", "Browse by Interest". I'll bet the option isn't
there due to an oversight. Thanks for your help. I'll try contacting the
MSN people directly...or just have a beer and forget about it.

There isn't supposed to be any "Documents" link on that page. That page is
just for the "My Storage Info" page. To get to the menu that contains
Pictures, Documents, Links, Calendar, and such, you have to go to a Group
Page - such as http://www.msnusers.com/JonKennedy or
http://groups.msn.com/jonkennedy Your just in the wrong place.

I take it you're also signed in on that site using your Passport? Have you
created your own group?

Now pass me a beer. ;-)
