this is the weirdest thing as i am not part of a network and have not
personally created any shared folders ( unless certain programs on the
computer are sharing ). i have tried to unshare them but the box just says i
am not part of a network therefore it will not let me check the box that will
make the folder private.

What folder? If you have a shared folder, right-click on it and then
click on the Sharing tab and uncheck the box for sharing.

For making private, see:

http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/private.htm - making stuff private
http://tinyurl.com/48x4w - MS website on How To Make Folders Private
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/undoprivate.htm - Ramesh - How to undo "Make
this folder private" option"

If you want more help, post back with more details. Remember that we
can't see your computer and you need to be descriptive. Here is a link
that will help you:

If you had gone to the "good post" link I gave you, you would know what
we need to know about your computer. A few things:

1. The version of your operating system - XP Pro or Home?
2. If sharing ever worked. If it did, what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?
3. Network setup.
4. Antivirus and/or security software in place.
5. Virus/malware status of the machine(s) and if you think they are
clean, what you used to determine this.

If you are not on a network, then why are you trying to share files and
with what/whom? If you want to share files with another user on the
same computer, use the Shared Files folder.

What is the name of the shared folders? There are several default shares
that Windows sets up for administrative use. If the share names end in $
then this is what you are seeing.
