how to test Hard Drive

Hi All
Iam a newbie in the world of computer hardware and iam trying to learn some of the problems that iam having withmy compaq preserio 2710us laptop
I have a problem where my laptop gives a blue screen with this

STOP: 0x0000007A (0XE1521E94, 0xC000000E
0xBF96BF49,0X1737C860

WIN32K.sys - Address ....

OR it sometimes gives a black screen saying "Operating System Not found" .....I have tried re-restoring with the QuickRestore CDs that i got when i bought this laptop....but failed time and again. It gives some kind of a rattling sound and gives this blue screen with the above proble

So, I tried running the Memtest on my laptop Memory yesterday and it didn't failed. There were no errors found. So, iam assuming that the memory is fine. Now, I wanted to check if my Hard Drive is ok or not

and i have contacted Compaq if they can tell me who is the manufacturer of this hard drive. But they seems to know nothing about it and saying take it to a repair shop and they can tell you. If I take this laptop to a repair shop they might atleast 100$ .....:

can anybody please tell me who manufacture the Hard Drive for Compaq Preserio 2710us. I have bought this laptop in January 2002. The part number of DRV,HD,20GB - 253920-00

See my response to your other post, where you said you learned this is a
Toshiba drive.

Or, just go to www.toshiba.com and click your way to Tech Support for
storage devices - as I did to find the URL that I gave you in the other
thread.
