How to tell if OEM

This may be a dumb question, but I am trying to repair the registry on a
laptop that keeps getting the lsass.exe system error. I have read a bunch of
threads about this problem and one of the solutions is to repair the registry
using the knowledge base from Microsoft 307545. There is a warning that this
shouldn't be attempted on a system that has OEM software. It is a Fujitsu
Siemen Amilo that only comes with a recovery disc. I can't see anywhere that
it says OEM altho I am guessing it probably is. I have seen the license key
that says OEM in it, but this doesn't. I can't boot the thing, so I can't
actually check anywhere on the hard drive, so should it say OEM on the
software ID if this is the case? So my question is, how do I tell? Or
should I just assume it is.

Thanks

Right click on My Computer/Properties. You'll see a long number/letters
that should say either retail or OEM. That said, without looking, yours
is an OEM.

You may safely assume the Fujitsu recovery disc
is a customized OEM version of Windows XP.

That's makes pretty much a cinch that it's OEM software, unless the
laptop's owner went out and purchased a retail license and used it to
replace the original OS. (If its your own laptop, surely you'd know
what you purchased, wouldn't you? Or was the laptop a gift?) Only OEMs
provide Recovery CDs; all retail versions would have a full installation CD.

I can't see anywhere that
it says OEM altho I am guessing it probably is.

What does the Product ID say? The Product *ID* is created during the
installation process and is prominently displayed on the General
Properties tab of the My Computer icon. If it's an OEM license, the
letters "OEM" are rather hard to miss.

I have seen the license key
that says OEM in it, but this doesn't.

Not with any Microsoft products, you haven't.

I can't boot the thing, so I can't
actually check anywhere on the hard drive, so should it say OEM on the
software ID if this is the case?

Is there a Certificate of Authenticity label affixed to the underside
of the laptop? If so, the laptop originally came with an OEM license.

Having worked for Fujitsu in the Portland area where they used to build
the laptop I can tell you that you probably do not have the original Windows
XP CD. I assume that you are refering to Windows XP? Companies many times
Use a CD to install and don't give you the original, so that does create a
problem. Your best bet is to get ahold of Fujitsu explaining the situation
that you weren't sent an original CD with the lap top. One of two things
could happen, they could ship you one or offer to sell you one. Don't get
ripped off you can buy an OEM copy off the Internet for around the $90
range. Hope this helps.
By the way Fujitsu isn't the only one to participate in this practice of
note sending or officially selling you and OEM copy of Windows.
