How to stop Word closing when the last document is closed

Can anyone tell me how to stop the 'Word' program closing when the last
document is closed? When in Excel, you can close the last speadsheet and the
program stays open waiting for you to either open another or start a new
spreadsheet. Can this be set up in Word? HELP PLEASE! Reply also to
(e-mail address removed) please.

You can use Ctrl+F4 to close documents; this will leave Word running when
closing the final document of a session.

Thanks for that Stefan. Do you know if there is a check box in 'Word
Options' or similar that can make this the default situation?

That irritated me too. You can add the Close (file close) command to your
quick access toolbar.

Thanks Pam! A good way of getting around the problem, but I am still a
little dissapointed that MS had not thought of this!

You are welcome. I forgot about this option:

If you want Word to work like Excel, go to Word options > Advanced and in
the Display section clear the check box for Show all windows in Taskbar.
Each subwindow will have its own close button, and when a subwindow is
maximized, the upper right portion of the main window looks a lot like
2003's.

I had tried going back to that option right after MS made it available (back
in W2002?) but found that I really like seeing what's open in the toolbar.
