How to stop Windows Installer

S

Sasha

Here's what happens when I either start up Windows XP or
open Microsoft Word 2002. First I get a small window that
says: "Windows Installer. Preparing to Install." Then,
please wait while Windows configures MS Word 2002.
Then: "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-Rom
or other removable disk that is not available. Inset the
Microsoft Word 2002 disk and click okay." Here I click
cancel and then get the following error message: "Error
1706: Setup cannot find the required information. Check
your connection to the network or CD ROM Drive."

Well, at this point, I'd like to cut my losses and try to
remove all these messages - mainly because I'm using a
friend's computer and hope that I don't have to return it
to her with these annoying messages which appear
everytime on startup.

I was originally trying to download some Chinese fonts
from the the internet when this problem happened but as I
said, I am more interested in removing the sequences of
messages which slow up the computer start up and require
one's attention.

Thanks,

Sasha

So what happens after you insert the Office XP or Word 2002 CD and continue?
Might it then identify what component within Office/Word that you touched
but which was originally configured during the install to "install on first
use"?

Hi,
thanks for your reply. In answer to your questions. I
don't have access to any program CDs. The computer is on
loan from a friend. I'm not sure how Windows Installer
got activated on startup. I never went into the program
files and changed anything. As I mentioned, this problem
seemed to occur after I tried downloading some Chinese
fonts from the internet. For some reason, I was not
successful at this. I only want to figure out how to stop
Windows Installer at this point. thanks, sasha

Your downloading and installing onto your "friend's" computer? Hope your
friend doesn't expect back the same computer they gave you. Since you don't
have the install CD, you should simply keep skipping or escaping the
attempted update install until you give the computer back to its owner so
*they* can decide how they want to handle it.

One of the items during the install is to select which language sets to
include. Chinese is probably listed. So when you got asked or instigated
an install of the Chinese fonts, it expects to get them from the
installation media - which you don't have. If you use Add/Remove Programs
to click Change for "Microsoft Office" (or for the standalone product, like
Word only), click on the Help button and you'll see the description:

"Installed on First Use: The feature will be installed on your hard disk
when you use the feature for the first time. At that time, you will need
access to the CD or network server you installed from in order to install
the feature. This option may not be available for all features."

Simplified Chinese is an option under the International Support. Maybe it
is possible to reconfigure it to NOT install to eliminate the nuisance popup
asking for the install CD.

Hi,

I used one of the links to download a Windows Installer
Cleanup utility, removed Word 2002 from the list, then
reinstalled Word 2002 (I found the CD). That solved the
problem - no more annoying messages on startup.

thanks for your help.
