How to stop my widescreen laptop 'stretching' slides unacceptably?

When I use my newly aquired 'Widescreen' laptop to play a Powerpoint
presentation previously created on my pc with a 'standard' screen format, the
slides are stretched unacceptably to fill the wide screen. What can I do
about this?
