msmsgs.exe is showing up in my task manager list, and I don't use Windows
Messaging. I uninstalled Windows Messaging (as a Windows component in
add/remove
programs).
There is nothing in Programs Startup. The program doesn't show up in the
registry Run folders in current_user or local_machine. The program doesn's
show up in
Services.
I disabled the Remote Assistance options.
Anyone know what calls this program and how to get rid of it (or does it
have a purpose)?
thanks
bill

Bill,

Open Windows Messenger up and click on "Tools" and then "Options". Now
click on the "Preferences" tab and uncheck "Run this program when Windows
Starts".
Now click on "Okay" and close Windows Messenger! If you find that you still
have the problem then dissable the messenger service!

Drop me a line if you get stuck.

Removing Windows Messenger via Add/Remove Windows Components will not
actually uninstall the program, just remove its shortcuts from the start
menu.

To stop msmsgs.exe from starting when you log on, you must edit the
registry. Just go to start>run and type "regedt32" and hit enter. This will
open up the Windows Registry Editor. Browse to the following location:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run in the left
pane; then, in the right pane, look for the entry with msmsgs.exe in it and
delete it. This will stop Windows messenger from starting up when you logon.

If you want to totally uninstall Windows Messenger, then do the following,
in addition to the above:

Browse to C:\Windows\inf and open the file "sysoc.inf" (it should just open
in notepad). In this file, look for the line that begins "msmsgs=msgrocm..."
and delete the word "hide," which is at the end of the line. Then close and
save the file. After this go back to Add/Remove Windows Components and you
will see a new Windows Messenger entry that will have a grey diamond next to
it instead of the green guy - just uncheck both Windows Messenger entries
and go through the wizard.

That should be all you need to do.

To Disable Messenger Four things to do.

Messenger, tools menu, Options uncheck the item for start at windows start

Messenger, tools menu, Options uncheck the item for run in background

OE, Tools menu, Options, uncheck run Messenger at startup

Disable or don't open the 'contacts' pane in IE, and OE
(OE, View menu, "customize toolbar", uncheck 'contacts bar')

Tools" and then "Options". Now click on the "Preferences" tab and uncheck
"Run this program when Windows Starts".
This is done and "run in background ..." is also deselected.
Now click on "Okay" and close Windows Messenger! If you find that you
still have the problem then dissable the messenger service!
Messenger service is disabled.

msmsgs.exe is still in taskmgr.

Any other things to try?

thanks
Bill

Just to see what would happen, I stripped every occurence of "msmsgs.exe" in
the registry data.
On a reboot, Norton Antivirus gave an error message about its autoprotect
mode.
I deselected its intstant messaging option for Windows Messaging and the
problem (and NAV error) is gone.
Apparently, even though the messaging service is disabled, uninstalled,
whatever, NAV executes msmsgs.exe
regardless as part of its autoprotect launch.
Go figure. Maybe I should have been able to spot that in a log file?
Anyway, thanks guys.
