How to stop bringing in messages left on server when already in?

My husband and I share an email account. We leave the messages on the server
for 14 days, and they come in to each of our computers. Just recently he has
installed and switched to Outlook from Outlook Express. Now every time he
checks the email from a fresh boot of the computer, it brings in everything
that was on the server, rather than just the new messages. When using Outlook
Express, it only brought in the new messages. My computer uses Outlook, and
it only brings in the new messages. We have compared settings for email
accounts and the ones we checked are all the same on both computers. How can
we get his Outlook to only bring in the new messages and not all of them?

Something is affecting the UIDL cache Outlook is storing. Office SP1
addresses this. Is SP installed?

We checked last night and the service pack has already been installed. So it
must be something else. His computer is new, and we wondered if it might be
because he decided to change to outlook while we were on a trip. There is a
wireless connection built into the laptop, and he was connected through
someone else's dsl connection that the wireless recognized and connected to.
The problem did not happen until we came home to our own dsl (a different
company) and it was connected that way. Could it be looking for the other
connection? We don't know that much about how wireless connections work, but
were wondering if that might be part of the problem. If that wouldn't be the
problem, what else might it be? Is there a setting somewhere that we need to
check? Thanks.

It doesn't strike me that this would affect it, if he connected to the same
POP server with either network, since it is the POP server that generates
the UIDL values which Outlook stores, so they should have been the same no
matter what network was used, but he could try creating a new mail profile
(pointing it at his existing PST so he loses nothing) to regenerate the
cache. He should see one repeat download of the messages, since Outlook
would be starting over, but no more after that.
