How to show more filename characters in folders?

When I open an XP (classic) folder with filenames longer than about 20
characters the name is shortened with dots. Is there a way to set things
globally so that I can see the whole name unabbreviated?

Change the folder's view to Details. Then expand the column for file names.

Tip: Place mouse cursor on the right most "bar" of a column's title bar
area (Name, for example). When you see the cursor change to a double arrow,
double click. The column will automatically expand to accommodate the
longest file name.

Grab hold (with the mouse cursor) the vertical bar that separates <name> and
<size> at the head of the column and drag it to the right.

Double click a header divider to open a column to the width needed to view
the longest entry.

You have to drag it back to get it to be narrow again.

Thanks guys, I was using List view rather than Details. Now I can see the
column dividers I can do as you suggest. Is there anyway to set the default
column width for the Name column for all folder windows - presumably via a
reg entry?
