How to set ATA133

R

Ramesh

HI,

My motherboard uses NVIDIA chipset which supports ATA133 and so does my
Samsung 80GB hard disk. But the Everest system information software reports
that the Active DMA mode is ATA100.

Where do I configure to make it ATA133?

Thanks
Ramesh

Don't bother. If there is only one device on that IDE cable, you will
not notice any performance difference between U/100 and U/133, because
that HD has a STR of <80 MB/s; which means that U/100 is not a limiter.

Even if there are two devices on that IDE cable, you are unlikely to
notice any performance difference with a PC running a Windows client OS.

I believe that "some" Samsung hard drives have a problem being identified as
ATA133, have you tried the Samsung web site or the Everest web site?

I'm not familiar with your MB but, you may have a switch in BIOS to toggle
100/133. Mine does.

Actually, your harddrive may be running at ATA133. The thing is that
ATA133 is the max speed that it is capable of going. Thought it may
actively be at 100, it's max throughput during times of heavy use can
reach upwards of 133. The real way to check is to Right Click on My
Computer and click properties, now go to the hardware tab and click on
Device Manager. Now go down to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller. Now right
click on Primary IDE (and you can try the others too) and go to the DMA
Settings tab. If it shows DMA 5, it is ACTIVELY at ATA100, if it shows
DMA 6, it is ACTIVELY at ATA133. My SATA shows DMA 5 even though it
should reach DMA 6.

In Everest, check under storage, then ATA. Notice it will say Active
UDMA Transfer mode DMA 5 and just above it Max UDMA Transfer Mode DMA 6 ;)

Thanks Nathan for that explanatory procedure. I did check under Device
Manager and it says Current DMA 5.

In Everest Storage, it shows both Active and Max UDMA as DMA5.

Would you consider that as something missing?

Thanks again,

Usually, you need to install the UltraDMA IDE drivers for the motherboard
chipset. I do not know if nVidia chipset has one.

You problem may be the Everest System Information program. Get AIDA32.
It will give you the correct info.

Thanks Courtney for the suggestion. Could you guide me to AIDA32 please?

Thanks again.

Actually, Everest is AIDA32 (its successor). So no problem there.

Unfortunately, you are not going to get ATA133 at all times. I have
SATA/150 and checked with Everest Home when I first got the drive and
was bummed when it said UDMA Mode 5. After a bit of reading, I found
out that all ATA133 drives are set to UDMA 5 (ATA100) until the extra
bandwidth is required in which case it moves up to UDMA 6. So there
should be nothing wrong with your drive, but if you are concerned,
contact the harddrive manufacturer and ask them about it. That is the
sure way to get a good answer ;)

Thanks Courtney. Got the program from this site.

But aida32 gives the same result (max UDMA mode is UDMA5). Any suggestions
on what needs to be tweaked?

Thanks

Now MAX UDMA Mode should read UDMA6. Try installing the latest nForce
chipset drivers, update your BIOS to the most current version, check
your BIOS settings, and finally try Everest Home Edition from
www.lavalys.com (Used to be AIDA32, but this is the new, improved version :)

I have tested with Everest and AIDA32, both give the same result as Max mode
UDMA5. BIOS has been updated. But I have problems installing the latest
drivers. The install program starts and closes in a few seconds. Nothing
after that. Same thing happens with the drivers from the MBD manufacturer
site and NVIDIA site.

Any clues on what could be the problem?

Thanks very much for your support.

You may want to try these two things:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_udp_winxp_4.24

http://www.nvidia.com/object/sysutility_1.08.5.html

Also, you can try this:

1. Right-click My Computer press Properties.

2. Select the Hardware tab.

3. Press Device Manager.

4. Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

5. Double-click the primary IDE channel and then select the Driver tab.

6. Press the Update Driver button.

7. Select Install the software automatically (Recommended) and press Next.

8. Follow the on-screen instructions.

And finally, depending on your drive maker, you may download a utility
that enables ATA133 if it isn't already. Samsung makes a utility for
this: http://www.samsung.com/Products/HardDiskDrive/utilities/hutil.htm

Hope some of that helps :)

Actually, this whole thing is silly. The internal speed of your
harddrive is not going to exceed 72 MB/s which is well under ATA100,
only in cases of RAID are you going to achieve a faster rate. There
really is no need for ATA133 unless you plan on doing that. If what I
said below doesn't help, I would rip my harddrive out, check the serial
and specific model and make sure I didn't get ripped off. ;)

HI Nathan,

The drivers file has the same problem... setup terminates just after install
shield starts.

Sysutility works fine but nothing about IDE shows up in that.

Tried driver update. Windows had no further updates to offer. In any case,
my system is kept updated with windowsupdate regularly.

Bit wary to use the Hutil cos it says my data may be erased. Wonder if that
means I will need to install the whole system again.

Right now I need to find a way to install the drivers downloaded from
nvidia.

Thanks so much for your support.

As for that Hutil, I would be weary of running anything you don't know
what it does. It isn't worth risking your data over. Anyways, you don't
really need to worry about it not saying ATA133 or even being able to
hit that unless you plan on setting up RAID. The internal bandwidth of
most harddrives are around 80 MB/s which gives it 20 MB/s of overhead
anyways. As long as it works ok, I would just leave it alone ;)

I would check the serial number on it and make sure it really is an
ATA133 drive and you didn't get an ATA100 drive on accident. Sometimes
what the box says and what comes in it can be different.
