Not sure what you are looking for, but could it be something like this?

ShellExtension

This is a very handy application that extends Windows Explorer User
Interface with 3 useful commands for graphic files. ShellExtension adds
an option to context menu that allows you to view a thumbnail of an
image, convert it to any of supported formats and print them.

Thanks for the link, Zo...I'll be looking at that also...
How to see the images without running an external program.

I've found "Context Viewer" the answer to previewing my image files.

Topmost listing at this page:
http://www.virtualplastic.net/html/toptools.html

I like the option to set the preview size when the file shows in the menu.

It works with a number of definable filetypes, jpg/txt among them...but
won't work with gif without a Susie plug-in available at:
http://homepage1.nifty.com/uchi/soft/lzr120.lzh

Put the gif plug somewhere you can point to it via the "Context Viewer" gui
after install.
