How to save current set of open documents and later return to them

Is there a way to save, as a list, the set of documents (word docs, excel
spreadsheets, web pages ) that are open in your desktop at the current moment
(time 1)?

I would like to close these documents and work on something else for a
while (time 2)

Then at (time 3) I would like to return to the set of documents that I was
working on at (time 1): I mean, I want to open all the files that I had
open at (time 1), without having to hunt through the file storage directory
trees to find them all and open them all individually.
This would be a huge time saver, when multi-tasking among several projects.

Thanks
-Albert
PS: I have tried multi-desktop powertools, but I actually want to close the
documents at (time 1), so I can free system resources for (time 2).

You don't need to shut down to free resources. Minimise the app. It will eventually use no resources till restored.

I dont believe this is correct..Minimizing an application doesnt free up
essential system resources (GDI objects, physical memory, etc) .. they are
mostly still held by the process. .

I believe that a utility to save the current set of open documents, so they
can be all reopned again later would be a very useful tool. There are so many
times when I have to reboot when I dont want to because
1) the antivirus program has updated
2) windows has installed a patch
3) I have installed a new application.

Rebooting and having to manually open 20 documents again is a real pain,
just so the virus protection program is up to date and machine rebooted.
It is the equivalent of clearing off your physical desk and putting all
the paper documents you are working on in file cabinents, only to have to
retrieve them all again in 2 minutes.
I dont mind pausing while virus definitions file is updated or even
rebooting , but having to track down 20 files manually that were open and
perfectly fine on my comptuer desktop is a real nuisance

I did have a discussion with a senior MS programmer requesting this feature. It is stupid idea (as they expleined why). Windows is designed to swap out minimised programs. Minimise it and it will eventually use 0 bytes memory.

No need to be insulting. Plainly the idea I have (to save the set of open
documents ) is not "stupid" since several others have suggested the same
thing.

And to suggest that minimizing an application causes it to use zero bytes
is, well plain not true, no matter who you talk to. Consider for instance
that if the program iis still running, then clearly minimizing it does not
cause it to dissappear from the process queue of the OS and all data is not
swapped out.-- how else could it run in the background?
Also if you just run task manager , then minimize all of your instances
of word, you will not see word using zero bytes , no matter how long you
wait.

Anyway thank you for your input.
