How to run the devcon.exe utility?

Guest

I downloaded The DevCon command-line utility from Microsoft article ID 311272
to troubleshoot a printer and to remove another printer driver from a LPT1
port. The problem is that I can not understand the proper syntax to using
DevCon as explained in the article to run the utility from command prompt.
Any one's help to run this utility is welcomed. This article applies to
Windows XP Driver Development Kit and I don't have that in my XP Home Ed OS.
Is this the reason that it doesn't run on the command prompt?

command prompt message back is:
"C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>devcon.exe help
'devcon.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file."
The devcon utility was unzipped to "C:\WINNT\Temp\i386"
What can be infered from this problem?
Any help?

devcon.exe is not in a folder that is in the PATH.

Move devcon.exe to the C:\WINNT\system32 folder and then it should work.

C:\WINNT\Temp\i386 is not in the path and at some point everything in
C:\WINNT\Temp is going to be deleted as Temp means Temporary.

To see what folders are in your PATH...
Open a command prompt, type: path and hit your Enter key.

Path is a search path for executable files. If an executable file is not in
the PATH you would have to type the entire path in order to get an .exe file
to run.

I.e. C:\WINNT\Temp\i386\devcon.exe

Thank you, I can run the utility now.
Any suggestion on how to apply devcon to troubleshoot the problem I posted
under "Printing and Faxing" on this same newsgroup dated 4/16/2006: "CAN NOT
PRINT ON LEXMARKX83" ?
Any help is appreciated. "cause now I am unclear if I need to use devcon at
all to solve the printer issue.
Thank you again.

Forget devcon.

Did the printer ever work with Windows XP? Does it have XP drivers?

Assuming that you have the printer disk...
Unplug your printer from the computer.
Open Device Manager and uninstall your printer.
Reboot.
Reinstall your printer.

The printer did not work. First I downloaded the driver "CJXP83LE.exe" from
the Lexmark.com site and during installation a message appeared "not a signed
driver", I went ahead and clicked "continue installation anyway", after
completion the devise did not print. Presently I un-installed everything per
instructions in "http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm".
This week I'll also take the actual printer-hardware-to have it check and
find out if the actual printer/copier/scaner is functional or ruined. I have
a doubt if I ruined the hardware because I also downloaded and installed the
firmare "FW581WW.EXE" from the same Lexmark.com drivers' downloads.
Before installing the firmware the printer screen read"LexmarkX83,V 5.81"
afterwards it only displayed a blank screen and the power button would not
turn off the printer.
