What kind of border do you have on the cell? I don't understand the issue.

You can't change the text alignment in a cell, without affecting the
borders.

You could use the drawing tools to create borders, by drawing rectangles
around the cells, with no fill colour.

Exactly, Deb.

The good thing is you can still select the cell and edit the contents,
change the direction, etc.

And, if you carefully placed the drawing object exactly on the 'normal'
cell border, it acts like a cell border -- when you resize the row or
column.. the drawing object (rectangle/square) resizes too! (At least
in Office2003) Whereas if you put the drawing object inside the
physical cell border it won't move or resize. Try aligning only one or
two edges of the drawing object with one or more cell borders, too. The
object will resize in one direction, but not others.

You cannot do this.

You could use the drawing toolbar to fraw a rectangle around the cell and set
the background to transparent.

Set the line to 2 pts so's it stands out.
