As part of clean up processes run when Word is closed, the Clipboard is
cleared of content. Sometimes, if you place a "large amount" of content
(whatever that means) in the Clipboard, Word will prompt you retain the
content for use in other Office applications, but otherwise...

The Office clipboard is retained as long as any Office application remains
open. If you have Outlook open all the time for e-mail, perhaps, then
closing Word should not cause it to be deleted. If, however, you were only
using Word, then it has gone, I'm afraid.
