How to restart your computer in dos mode if you do not have the xp boot disc with you?

I would like to knoe how to restart my windows xp in dos mode with out having to use the boot disc? I tried to copoy the I.O.SYS and the Command.com file to a floppy, then restating my computer with it in the floppy drive but the system asked me to remouve the floppy and to press any key to continue? I could use some help over here!
