How to Replace Missing System Files??

S

Sobhan

The NTVDM system is not working on my Windows XP OS. The
reason is the ntio.sys file is missing. I want to know
how can I replace the missing file? Does Microsoft have a
site where you can find missing dlls and system files? I
have the XP Installation CD but I dont know how to
replace the file without completely re-installing XP.
I'll appreciate your help.

Cheers

Hold down the left shift key as you insert your XP CD.
(holding down the left shift key is just to keep the CD from auto running)
Once the CDROM drive has stopped making noise you can let go of the
left shift key.

Right click on "My Computer" icon and click on "Explore"
In Windows Explorer, make note of the CDROM drive letter that has the XP CD in it.
Close Windows Explorer

Click on START button and then click on RUN...
Type in "cmd" (without quotes) and then click "OK" or press <ENTER>

The command prompt window opens...
Type in these commands and press <ENTER> after each command:

cd\

cd windows\system32 (assuming that your Windows directory is C:\Windows)

expand <cdrom drive letter>\i386\ntio.sy_ ntio.sys

(the file should be expanded - meaning copied - into the C:\Windows\System32 folder)

exit

Restart the computer and see if you issue has been resolved -

You could also try this:

Click on START button and then click on RUN...
Type in "sfc /scannow" (without quotes) and then click "OK" or press <ENTER>

Insert the XP CD if requested - (holding down the left shift key again)

Restart the computer once "Windows File Protection" has finished.
