Ok, I'm in the MMC, and under "Internet Information Services" I see the name
I am to change, but I see no way to change it. "Action" does not list
"Rename". Neither do I see a means in properties list to take such an
action. Where am I missing it?

Under Internet Information Services is the name of the computer - Properties
of it include: List Master Properties as WWW Service and configuration for
MIME Map. Nothing there

Below the name of the computer is "Default Web Site". It's Properties menu
includes a page "Web Site, which includes a section "Web Site
Identification", and a box below is "Description". Changing the name from
"Default Web Site" in the "Description" box to the name I want results in a
change in its listing in the MMC tree, but has NO effect when I attempt to
reach that web by typing in its new name in a browser on the server itself.
Typing in the old name will display the web, so I see no effect in making
this change!

Please be more specific in your answers. Thanks

Hi Raymond,

Right click the folder (root web) that you wish to change in MMC | Rename

The root web under IIS is either (all the same)
http://127.0.0.1/ or http://localhost/ or http://machinename/ (as set in your Computer properties)
Under Home Directory you can set the location of the root web as a folder on your PC (default is c:\inetpub\wwwroot), a network
share (existing), or a redirection URL

What are you specifically trying to change

Under the Home Directory it is set as c:\inetpub\wwwroot as originally
determined when I installed IIS. I do not want to change the location. I
want to change its name.

There appears to be a mixture of instructions here that deal with changing
the folder containing the web on the server at c:\Inetpub\wwwroot and the
actual name of the web as seen in the MMC. I want to change the name as
seen in the MMC. As I have stated below, there is no Rename in the menus
available by right clicking on the name of the computer at the top of the
tree in the MMC window. The entry below it is "Default Web Site". That can
be changed, and the change is reflected in the MMC, but has no effect when
attempting to access the web on the server by its "new" name.

I guess I could rename the computer, which might change the name at the top
of the tree in the MMC, but I thought I had read that that causes problems.

You can't change that name, as the host is your PC.

No, what you asking is how to change the name of the server (machine), not a
web. To change the name as in http://machinename, you have rename the
computer.

If you are running Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2003 serve, then you can
multiple root web, with individual names, but not under Windows XP Pro,
Windows 2000 Pro, etc.

Sorry, many folks have tried to help with this thread, and I certainly
appreciated it. However, I still have no clue as to how to change the name
of a root web on my server. I'll just reload windows and rename it that
way!!

Raymond,

You can not rename the root web, you can only change the name of your
machine, which is done by right clicking the icon on your desktop for My
Computer, properties, Computer Name.
