How do I go about removing unwanted or unused taskbar items?
I know that I can right click on some items and choose exit, but when I
reboot they come back.

It depends on what these mysterious items are. If they are programs you
no longer want, use Add/Remove Programs and uninstall them. If they are
programs you do want but don't want to start with Windows, open the
programs and look for preferences/options to change this. If no
preferences/options are available, use the System Configuration Utility
to change the startup behavior.

If you want more help, then please provide more details about the items
and what you would like to do. Here is a link to help you make a good

Are you talking about the Taskbar over in the far right
corner with the clock?

Or are you talking about the Quick Launch?

If you are referring to the Taskbar, you turn those off by
Going into Start, then Run.
Type
msconfig
look at the FAR right (in XP Pro) for the "Startup" tab.
Open the Startup menu, and untick those programs you don't
want in your Taskbar.

When you finish, click "Apply"

Reboot.

If you are talking about removing items from your Quick
Launch, simply right click the item, and drag it up onto
your desktop, and then delete it.
