How to remove quote from user name.

When I reinstalled XP, I goofed when I
created the user Dudely, and I put a single quote in as I hit Enter
(fat fingeritis). So my user is now Dudely' See the quote? I've
tried a variety of methods of getting rid of it, but I can't. I
tried
renaming the User, Deleting the user, renaming the directory, adding
a
new user then deleting the old one, etc. Nothing works. Do I have
to
reinstall this thing yet again in order to fix the user?

This part of your post makes no sense: "adding a new user then deleting the
old one". What happens when you try? Because to fix this you need to:

1. Create a new user called Dudely.

2. If you don't have one, create a third user account - possibly called Tech
or the like - (or if you have XP Pro use the built-in Administrator
account) from which to work.

3. Log into the new Dudely account once.

4. Log into the new extra account Tech.

5. Copy the data and settings from the old Dudely' account to the new Dudely
account per the instructions here:

6. You'll have to make a few cosmetic adjustments in the new Dudely account
to get it exactly to your taste but all your stuff should now be there.
Once you're satisfied that all is well, go to the User Accounts applet in
Control Panel and delete the old Dudely' account, including the files. I
suggest you keep the extra Tech account for emergencies.

7. If you want to boot directly to Dudely's Desktop, you can set this up
automatically:

Configure Windows to Automatically Login (MVP Ramesh) -

I appreciate the response, however I didn't have the patience to wait
for an answer, and already re-installed XP. If I had known how long
it was going to take (couldn't read my motherboard CD and other
agonizing tales of horror) I would of waited - it would of been
faster.

So, I giess we'll never know if the above would of worked for me,
however one thing I failed to do was login to the new account so maybe
that was the problem?? Who knows...

In any event, I have a new - semi-related problem. I'll post a fresh
message.
