I am running WinXP SP2 and the list of items under My Network Places is
getting longer and longer. How do I delete these items? Many no longer point
to valid locations. Clicking on the invalid ones just brings up the
hourglass and finally it times out with the message that the path is no
longer valid.

To stop it happening in the first place:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=320138

To purge the list:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\WorkgroupCrawler\

right click on them and click delete...

That doesn't work if the path is no longer valid. You get an error message
when you try to click on them and then get kicked off the item.
