How to remove "I" from the document

I noticed that my word document has a gray color "I" like a roman 1 figure. I
cannot select it or delete it. How do I get rid of it.

Thanks for any tips.

It's a bookmark.

You can go to the Insert > Bookmark dialog, select its name, and click the
Delete button. Alternatively, you can go to Tools > Options > View and
uncheck the box for "Bookmarks"; in that case it will still be in the
document (it doesn't do any harm, and might serve a purpose) but you just
won't see it.

I tried both but it did not remove the text. There is no bookmark in the
document. Any other idea what it could be?

Is it showing up in all documents or just in that one document? Another
possibility is that it's something in the drawing layer--perhaps in a header
or footer. Is it showing up on all pages? Just one?

If you edit the header/footer, does it darken and become selectable?

Is it in the first page header/footer?

"If you edit the header/footer, does it darken and become selectable"
Can you select it with the white pointer from the drawing toolbar?

In the edit header/footer it did not darken or become selectable and neither
I could select it with white pointer from the drawing toolar.

Something interesting happened though. I put cursor on the "I" and hit space
and it expanded like a bracket "[]". I was able to type in it. I simply
selected the whole thing and deleted it. But I am still mystified as to what
it was? It was not the regular brackets typed from the keyboard "[]".

Thanks,
UT

I'll repeat my first statement: it's a bookmark. What you're describing is
exactly how bookmarks behave.

Go to Tools > Options > View and uncheck the box for "Bookmarks" as I told you
before. That way, if you (deliberately or accidentally) get bookmarks in the
future, you won't have to look at them. If you ever do want to see where they
are, go back and check the box again.
