How to reload first DC?

A

Alan Loehr

I am hoping to locate a document which will detail how to reload my first
2000 DC.
I have a second DC in the same location. The first DC, which needs to be
reloaded, is my DNS and DHCP. The second DC has Exchange 2000. Due to
problems caused by numerous attempts at installing backup software, it's
been determined that the server OS should be reloaded. Is there a document
which details the most direct way to accomplish this?

thanks

The process of reloding one DC is fairly simple and straight forward. you
need:
1. Transfer all FSMO roles, that your first DC holds to another server
2. Install and configure second DC as DNS server (if not already)
3. Make second server a Global Catalog Server if not already.
4. Configure clients not to use your first DC DNS server
5. Move DHCP to second server
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;130642)
6. run dcpromo on first server and remove domain controller
7. Reinstall the server
8. dcpromo the server and configure DNS,......
9. Move DHCP back to original server

That's about it. If any of this steps is not clear, please post back

I was under the impression that by running DCpromo on the
first DC that "dcpromo" will transfer the FSMO roles
automatically. The only service needed to manually
transfer would be the GC. Am I missing something???

Thanks for your response. I guess it would be better to
do it manually than risk the automation failing and
having to take over the roles which can be a total
nightmare.
