How to recover the address bar in taskbar in Windows XP SP3?

D

drbobgold

I found this addressbar for XP3 online, and it has worked for me, even
better than the original.

This better than original fix can be downloaded:

It is removed. There was concern about an EU ruling concerning the
integration of IE components so MS decided to play it safe and just removed
it.

I could find no mention of that in the white papers or release notes or
issues..
I sent Microsoft feedback about it. However, some users confirmed it was
removed
so I will not install sp3 until I find a reliable fix. Searching Microsoft
finds
this about the removal and there is some mention of replacing a .dll (how
safe
is that?)
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2589449&SiteID=17

And see this:

Include in your reasons it is always visible and easier to type into if
you are
working from a paper copy.

| To open program/folder/file/url directly instead of 'start-run-balabala'
or
| 'open explorer/ie first and type address'.
| To record some data temporarily, such as a phone number.
| To treat it as a 'buffer' of clipboard.

I tried using this but it not only didn't work but seems to have screwed up
my display. I uninstalled and it did not correct it, I now also get a
windows explorer error upon start up. (this was on a brand new lenovo X61)

The problem it made was that the screen is much darker compared to the
original output. suggestions on how to fix this now?

Did you do this:

To uninstall:

1. Use the Add/Remove program dialog to remove AddressBar for Windows XP SP3
2. Log off and back on or reboot

3. Start Menu, Run: regsvr32 /u c:\windows\system32\addressbar.dll
4. Log off and back on or reboot
5. Delete c:\windows\system32\addressbar.dll

I used the address bar for A LOT for a lot of different reasons so thank you
for the workaround, it work perfectly so far.

I dont get why a feature of a browser offered by the same company who made
the OS is an antitrust issue when anyone can easily disable it if they wished.

Why it was there for more than 7 years before it was told to be taken out?
AFTER Vista came out?! JUST before XP loses support??!!

lets all thank Europe for its backwards legal system.

Google Desktop allows you to search your desktop for anything... But more
relevant to this conversation hitting Ctrl Ctrl pops up a little window that
acts like an enhanced Address Bar. You can search your desktop or the web
from it or you can type in a URL and it will open in your default browser. I
never used it for the URL (didn't think about it) until after my Address Bar
disappeared. It's actually easier to use than the Address Bar was. So
thanks Microsoft for helping me find a better way to work.

Hi,

I just installed the CNET program and it works.

Kind of anoying though to add extra software to use a feature that was there
before.

Can anybody tell why they removed it?

Regards

come on guys, address bar is much easier to restore without third party
programs or DLLs!

1. Unlock your taskbar;
2. Create a normal toolbar of any folder;
3. Drag the toolbar of that folder you have just created outside your your
taskbar and keep it floating on your desktop;
4. Now within the new floating toolbar, right-click any free area and point
to "Toolbars" then click "Address";
5. Customize the look of your Address bar (drag it up);
6. Right-click again within the toolbar, point to "Toolbars" and uncheck the
name of the folder you created the toolbar for;
8. Drag the-now-new-address-bar to your task bar!

ENJOY!

not everyone wants to install software to replace something that is already a
part of the OS though...

search.... check.
open url from address bar... check.

Windows (live) Desktop Search is the competitive counterpart of Google
desktop which both have their uses I guess but google desktop is pretty
cool.. Id rather not have an Indexing service eating all my memory so Ill
never use either of them.

Simplicity is good :)
Adressbar restored is even gooder :D

Here's a fix, or at least a workaround, that I came accross.

1. Right-click on the Taskbar and uncheck Lock the Taskbar if it is checked.

2. Right-click on the Taskbar, choose Toolbars, then New Toolbar.

3. Click on Desktop, then click OK.

4. Drag the new toolbar named Desktop that you created from the Taskbar to
the Desktop to undock it (it will change to a panel, you have to undock it as
it won't work otherwise).

5. Now right-click on the undocked panel, choose Toolbars, then Address.

6. Drag the panel from the Desktop back to the Taskbar and presto!!!, two
toolbars
will appear in the Taskbar, one of which is "Address".

7. Right-click on the toolbar named Desktop and choose Close Toolbar.

8. Re-size the Address Toolbar to the size you prefer.

9. Right-click on the Taskbar and re-check Lock the Taskbar if you
previously had it checked.

Supporting Tim C. solution (on the thread "Address Bar missing after SP3
Install"), look what I did:

After creating the address bar using Tim C. workaround, i moved the taskbar
to the top of my screen (just hold on the mouse click on the taskbar, from
its default position on bottom, and drag it left then top), then i drag the
address bar towards the bottom! this way, the address bar remains there even
after restart! Now i have the address bar the place i'm used to it to be, on
the bottom of the screen, while the taskbar is on top which i am getting used
to it :).

i followed this problem since the release of SP3, and i think this method
would be the best solution we can reach, hoping it will close this running on
problem...

finally, i hope this post would be beneficial for all of you guys and for
all who are interested in this feature and want it back.

Obviously this has been a while since Angie wrote this, and obviously a lot
of us used the Address Bar. What a fix... less than 20 seconds to resolve.
Nice work Angie!

Dj65 and Angie, i am sorry to tell you, but this won't work cos the address
bar will disappear after restart!
