How to read 'There is an error in XML document (x,y)'?

I'm getting 'There is an error in XML document (x,y)' message. I'm trying to
figure out what's wrong with my document (it's really big, so it would take
me very long time to look at every single line), but I'm not sure how to
interpret x and y. I thought x is the line number and y is the position of
the "illegal character", but it doesn't seem to be the case.
Thank you for any help.
