Hi there,

Indeed, unlike in Outlook Express, I noticed that those five characters featuring
a lower section in their "design" are being displayed without such "extension"...

Of course it's not really "a big issue", nevertheless I'm a bit annoyed (!).

So any valuable tip of how to fix this would be appreciated; thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Philippe

Try right clicking on the Desktop and choose personalize and then try changing the font size (DPI) on the upper left. It may also be due to what you are using for the icon font.

You must be using a very unusual system font, or an overly large DPI setting.
Those character descenders don't even come close to being cut off on my screen.

BTW, please don't post in HTML, or if you do, not in such a tiny font.

Thank you very much Steve for your valid reply.

Unfortunately I'm already using its default setting, ie. at 96 DPI...
However I could try to change the icon font, but would that affect
ALSO the font at Windows Mail (at "From, Date, To, Subject")??
But if so, kindly let me know "how" to proceed; thanks in advance!

Dear Gary,

Thank you very much for your valid reply.

Nope, I'm using its default setting at 96 DPI...

But then I could try indeed to change the system font
itself...but then "where" can it be altered at Vista?'
So thanks in advance for "guiding" me accordingly...

Bye, Philippe.
PS: Thanks for advising me, not to use HTML.

Hi Philippe,

The icon font will change all the other windows. I'm not sure what else
could be influencing the characters being cut off on your system. What font
is it using now for the icon font?

steve

Right-click on the desktop, Personalize, Windows Color and Appearance,
"Open classic appearance properties...", Advanced; under Item, select Icon,
choose font and size.
Whew, MS sure managed to bury this setting in Vista!

Hello Steve,

Hmm, would you be kind enough to give me "the path" for
finding out which font I'm actually using at my desk's icons?

Thanks...

Philippe

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your guideline; I was now able to check it up:
My default font+size is MS Sans Serif (8).
So I then tried several different fonts and sizes...but to no avail;
ie. those character descenders (q - p - y) are still being cut off
at Window Mail (at "From:" and "To:").

However I noticed now the following:
It's actually only affecting the Line 1 (From:) and Line 3 (To:)!
Indeed, those characters stated there are placed slightly lower
than the actual positioning/height of "From:" and "To:"!
Hence, not enough width left for those descenders...

Whereas Line 2 (Date:) and Line 4 (Subject:) are exactly
lined up on same height as their title (Date:+Subjcet:)...

Hmm, so is there a way to "line up" (lift up) those Line 1+3?

Philippe

Well, Gary gave you that information.

Can you make a screenshot using the snippet tool and then post it here?
HTML is okay so we can see what it looks like.

steve

Perhaps you should post a screenshot because I have trouble
visualizing which particular view you are talking about.

Sorry Gary, but I'm unable to display here such screenshot.
(Unless I could send it to your private address... So kindly
note that my email shown here is a VALID ONE, this just in
case you wanna contact me directly in "this" regard; okay...).

Anyway, let me try to explain it now "as follows":

1) Windows Mail top frames as it should be CORRECTLY:
From: (e-mail address removed)

Date: 15.04.2008

To: (e-mail address removed)

Subject: Anything goes

2) And here the "line-up" in my specific case (!):
From:
(e-mail address removed)
Date: 15 April 2008

To:
(e-mail address removed)
Subject: Anything goes

Note:
The titles themselves (From:/Date:/To:/Subject:) have all the same
distance from each other...but the edited parts to the right of
"From: and To:" (ie. email address) are displayed slightly lower;
hence, cutting off the descenders of q-p-y-g-j.
(Of course, on above example of mine I had to jump a full line,
whereas in reality it's only marginally lower...but obviously still
enough to cut off those descenders!).

Gary, I really HOPE that you won't loose "patience" with me...

Bye, Philippe.

Okay Steve, I'll try to show such screenshot by tomorrow.
In the meantime kindly see my latest reply to Gary...
Thank you to you too for your kind support!
Bye, Philippe.

It could be a particular theme you are using or I just don't know what. A
screenshot might help.

steve

By "top frame" do you mean the message list pane?
If so, mine does not have a vertical listing of headers for a given
message. All headers for one message are on one horizontal line.
Or do you mean a message compose window?

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.
I am not used to seeing that screen because I read messages in
the preview ('reading') pane rather than opening them in their own
window. When I did so, I saw the same thing you've been seeing.
Namely, the text after 'From:' and "To:" is definitely displaced downwards,
causing the lowest part of the character descenders to be cut off.
Phil, you have a very discerning eye! This would appear to be a GUI
design defect in WLM.

Okay Gary, so here's now such a screenshot:
You can clearly see that at the line "From:" and "To:",
the email address is lined up slightly lower (!); hence,
cutting off the "p" of "pim" and the "g" from "gmx"!
(But an "even" line-up at "Date:" and "Subject:").

Thank you very much Gary for the nice 'flowers' of yours!
Well who knows: possibly Swiss people have slightly 'better eyes',
and that's why we do produce 'good' watches in this world; he, he!
Anyway, glad to know that 'this' is not a local fault on my system...
Note: When checking this on an email from such Newsgroup, only
the text after 'From:' is displaced downwards, but it's NOT the
case at the 3rd line 'Newsgroups:' (named 'From:' on private mails).
And upon printing, no such issue at all on any mails.
Philippe

Glad we were able to pin down the circumstances under which
this defect occurs. The list of bugs found in Windows Mail must
be getting pretty long by now!

Unfortunately...neither worked, dear Steve.
ie. by removing 'all the way' this 3rd party program (of Smiley
Central/My Web Search) and/or disabling this text labels feature.
But since GARY noticed on his very own system this absolute
identical appearance (and what about...you??), I reckon that it
might be indeed an internal 'design fault' at WM itself...no??
PhilippeThat's what I thought. You have a 3rd party program that has added a
toolbar to the message window and that is probably what is causing the
problem. Try getting rid of that toolbar and see if the problem goes away.
Alternatively, you can right click on the toolbar that begins with Reply
button and remove the text labels and see if that fixes things. But I think
its what ever program that is generating that extra toolbar that is the
culprit.

cheers,

steve
