How to prevent normal.dot from attaching to a new document?

When opening a new document in word that uses a custom template, when I check
the attached template (Templates and Add-ins under Tools), it is always
normal.dot rather than the template from which I created the new document.
How can I force a new document to use my custom template and styles
automatically, rather than having to use Templates & Add-Ins and Update
Styles Automatically with each new document?

How are you creating the document? How are you making it "use a custom
template"?

If you go via File > New and choose the Template, that does what you ask.

If you use File > New to create a new document from a template, that will be
the attached template. The only way I know of to interfere with this is a
macro that attaches a different template. The same is true if you create the
new document by double-clicking on the icon for the template in Explorer.

Is it possible that your template is really a document? Perhaps even one
that was renamed as a .dot file? Try opening the template and using SaveAs
to save it as a template.
