Hello,

I have Windows XP Home Edition on my macine. Today I decided to put the
address toolbar on the Taskbar. It is working great except that it is
keeping a list of previous websites that I have gone to using the address
bar. Is there a way to stop this from happening? Is there a procedure to
prevent Windows XP Home Edition from keeping lists of any kind?

Regards,

Ken

Yes
Control Panel, Internet Options, Content tab, Autocomplete
Uncheck all or the ones you don't want
Clear forms/passwords
OK..

Hello,

That didn't work. Does the computer have to be rebooted for this to take
effect? When I went to the "General Tab" under "Internet Properties" and
clicked on "Clear History", that cleared the list. This address bar is on
the Taskbar. I have "Days to keep pages in history" set to "0". Is there a
way to completely disable History? I do not want Window to store any lists
of any kind on my computer.

Ken

In Internet Options> General, uncheck the option for "inline AutoComplete."
There is a similar setting in Folder Options for Windows Explorer. "Best
practice" is to have these both enabled or both disabled. Reference:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q230592

Once these settings have been changed, use Internet Options to clear all
history.

If you still see an occasional address autocompleting, you may need to edit
the key in the registry for typed URLs. Recommend deleting all items under
the TypedURL key instead picking and choosing. Reference for registry
location and related info:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/answers4.htm#autocomplete

(Although that page was written for an older version of IE, the information
still applies and even includes a section for the XP registry locations)

Hello,

That is what I am doing for now, but I would like to not have to do it
everytime I use the address bar in the taskbar.

I have Windows XP Home Edition. "Inline AutoComplete" is not under the
"General" tab. It is under "Content." There is no setting for "Inline
AutoComplete" under "Folder Options" for Window Explorer. The above web site
is for Windows 98. Here is a quote from that web site.

<Quote On>
RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, enable or disable either of the features listed
above so that both are either enabled or disabled: 1. On the Tools menu in
Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.
2. Click the Advanced tab.
3. Under Browsing, click to select or clear either of the following
check boxes:

. Use inline AutoComplete for Web addresses
. Use inline AutoComplete in Windows Explorer
Make sure that either both check boxes are cleared or that both check
boxes are selected.
4. Click OK.

<Quote Off>

When I go to "Internet Options\Advanced" there is only "Use inline
AutoComplete for web address." As far as I can see, there are no options to
disable Inline AutoComplete in Windows Explorer anywhere on my computer.
Once these settings have been changed, use Internet Options to clear all
history.

If you still see an occasional address autocompleting, you may need to
edit

It looks like the second web site is for clearing history. I have no problem
clearing the list of URLs on the Address bar. I need help preventing the
list of URLs in the address bar on the taskbar from being saved to a list.
Is there a way to prevent Windows from keeping a list of URLs in the address
bar on the taskbar?

Regards,

Ken

1. Go to Internet Options > Click Delete Cookies + Delete Files
2. Go the Content tab > Click Autocomplete > Click Clear Forms
3.In the content tab > Click Autocomplete > Uncheck the entries you don't
want
4.Go to Advanced tab > Uncheck "Use inline autocomplete" + Scroll down and
choose the option "Do not search from the Address bar"

That's all , if you follow all the steps, you will not get any sites listed
in Add.bar

I have Windows XP Home Edition. "Inline AutoComplete" is not under the
"General" tab. It is under "Content."

There is a second auto-complete besides the one in Content. However, it is
on the Advanced page-not General (sorry!).

The Win98 page contains a section for Win XP.

Clearing history clears all but some typed URLs- hence the other reference
that expands on the registry locations for this category.

Get the existing history and recorded "Typed URLs" cleared out. Then
disable auto-complete in Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer. At that
point, it's as good as it gets using the tools within the GUI. If undesired
history still accumulates at this point -3rd party tools or registry tweaks
can be experimented with. Check sites such as Kelly's Corner XP and
Ramesh's XP pages (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/) for suggestions. Use "typed
urls" "auto-complete" and 'history" as search terms.
