How to open without losing data?

When I open an excel file I get the pop up "this workbook contains links
to other data sources" I can see the data on the spread sheet but if I
choose Either update or don't update the numbers all change to #name.
Is there anyway to open this spreadsheet while retaining the values
that were there?

go to edit | links | updates values | click startup prompt | choose
second option | ok | close

The problem with this is that I've now lost the data to make these
changes. I can see the numbers they are formula references to
workbooks on someones local drive. I need them not to update as I open
the file.
