How to open TMP file that may be damaged

I thought I lost a file yesterday. But i think I found it saved as a TMP file
because that is around the same time I would have saved my file. I tried to
open it in excel but it says it is unrecognizable, or may be damaged. I dont
want to do any further damage. I really need the file ASAP or i will have to
do it all over again. Any suggestions.
 
Change the file extension from .tmp or whatever it is now to .xls, answer
Yes to the prompt and open the file.
