HI! I want to move the Inetpub dir to a larger partition and away from my
boot drive. is there a desired way of doing this? should I use Explorer?

WinXp Pro
Using websites made in Dreamweaver MX 2004.

Paul

You can't move Inetpub, and I not sure under Windows XP Pro if you can create virtual webs on
another drive, which you can do under Windows IIS server versions, however the best place to ask
this is in the appropriate Windows newsgroup.

You would do this using the IIS Admin snap-in. Every virtual directory is
mapped to a file directory. In the Properties dialog for your localhost,
under the "Home Directory" tab, set the directory to whatever directory you
want.

HI! Thanks for the response. so I would keep the inetput where it is then
right? and then just point the home directory where I want right?

I already took a look in the IIS manager and saw the properties box and I
was just wondering the best way of going about moving things to another
drive. at present I do not have a site in the Inetpub and was wondering is
it could be moved OR if it would be wise to move it for any good reason. (
like security reasons ).

Paul

I have all of our webs on a different drive...
We do not use InetPub...I deleted the entire folder from the C drive.
I created different folders on the D drive for the webs, and pointed
everything there in IIS.

HI! Thanks. that's exactly what I wanted to know. :) I will do the same...

Thanks again Thomas :)

Paul

Tom, however you are talking about Windows Server, not XP Pro.

On my Windows 2003 server, InetPub is empty, and the default web is stopped. All webs are stored on
my D drive.

Yes, I am talking about Windows Server.

Some time ago, MVP Dave Berry told me he also did it on WinXP Pro IIS, but I
couldn't get it to work for me. I must have missed out on something. But,
according to him, it can be done.

HI! I moved the my sites to and the default web to another drive and assign
the in the IIS manager the new home dirs. alls ok now. but one thing. I
tried to move the Inetpub for now ( Before actually deleting it) and I could
not move catalog.wci. I get an error message that its being used. I stopped
all the webs and the smtp folders in the manager. is there something else I
need to disable?

Paul.

catalog.wci is created by the index server
Turn off the Indexing Services for your folders / web in the Computer Management MMC

You need to delete the catalogue from Index Services:
Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management

Expand the tree for "Services and Applications", then expand "Indexing
Service"
Right click on the catalogue (probably named "Web", but may be
different) and choose delete. Make sure you are deleting the correct
catalogue. (Use properties to see the location.)

When you have moved the sites, you must create a new catalogue for the
default site.

HI! Thanks allot guys. :)

Paul.
