How to move Outlook 2003 from one computer to another

Why can't Microsoft provide advice on a really simple thing like moving
Outlook 2003 from one computer to another? There is advice on how to move a
data file from one computer to another but that doesn't say anything about
how to make your Contacts list an address book nor any advice on setting up
Archiving. I consider myself reasonably IT literate but I don't buy a new PC
every other day nor do I necessarily do a software upgrade every time I get a
new computer.
I have had to resort to the Discussion Forum threads to find out how to get
my Contacts to display as an Address book when writing an email.
Dare I say that I have not even come across an explanation of why my
Contacts are not an Address Book. Having a little note somewhere stating that
there is a difference (rather than having to deduce there is a difference)
would be most helpful.
If it wasn't for the Discussion Forum and other forums the most simple of
tasks would remain a mystery.

Dear TESAO_4,
Why can't Microsoft provide advice on a really simple thing like moving
Outlook 2003 from one computer to another?

Because it is not simple. Do you use Exchange or a local PST file or a
hosted Exchange server?

Do you use POP3 or IMAP accounts or an Exchange Server with a synchronizesd
OST file or with Web Access or without?

Do you know what is a NK2 file or where you store your rules, email
accounts, categories etc.)

Do you know that PST files are hided if you search for PST files?

Sorry but there is no "easy way"to move Outlook on a new computer if you
realy use Outlook.

Have a look on this site for information about: "Where is my Outlook data
stored?"

This data, you must backup on the old computer and you must move it to the
new computer.

Maybe it helps.

Thanks Oliver,
People who work in business environments will usually have access to an IT
specialist who will take care of any significant issues such as moving email
files. However, the same is not true for home users, the majority of whom
will be using (I guess) a POP3 account. Their usage of Outlook is most likley
going to be confined to email and a list of contacts and maybe the Calendar
(diary function). I am arguing that a document that addresses this usage
profile is likely to satisfy the needs of the vast majority of Outlook home
users.
Regards,
Tesa
