How to move indexing catalog files to a different disk?

I been looking at the Indexing documentation and can't find anything that
would indicate that the catalogs might be on a disk other than the system
disk.

Is it true that the index files must be on the system disk?

Is there just one index file or one per catalog or one per disk or one per
folder...?

Can you tell me how to move them to a different disk?

I found info on creating a new catalog.
Can I simply delete the "system" catalog and create a new on named "system"
on a different disk.
If I do that will it be the index file for all my disks?
