How to Make the View Stay in Place?

R

Rob Schneider

At some point, Front Page 2000 started behaving differently. I've used
this and previous versions of FP for years and have never seen this. I
don't know what caused it. I can't find a settin to change it.

If I have the Folder view shown, then double click on a file to edit it,
the FP Editor opens the file. When I save and close the file, FP editor
closes, and the Page View is shown.

I want it to stay on the Folder view (or at least stay on the View last
used). And I want it to have the "current" folder to be the folder in
which I last double clicked to open a file.

The only thing that I can think of that may have changed something is
that I installed Office 2003 Professional. I can't remember when I
first noticed the change in FP, so I can't say it was caused by Office.
I have installed all available XP Pro Updates.

Thoughts?

Use View Folder List instead
Folder View must be invoked after a page view (double clicking a file switches you to page view)

I use FP2000 for all development work, and if I double click a page in
Views:Folder to edit, then when I closed the page I am back in Views:page. I
have never noticed FP doing this any other way.

Mainly I work in Views:page mode which give me access to other folders while
having a page open for editing.

I mainly use folder view when I want to copy a group of files between
folders or between webs or to select a group of files to do a search and
replace on within a specific folder.

Yep. That did it (slapping head). Thanks!

Ok, what am I missing here?

I have the View panel and the Folder List panel open at all times, if I
select, then right click to open a file or double-click to open a file the
results are the same, the View panel, highlights the Page View icon no
matter if Folder View icon was highlighted prior.

(It's time like this that a screen shot tells it all! if the following
doesn't describe it right, I can use SnagIt to make a movie to post on
my web site. let me know.)

I have on left "Views Bar". Gray all to right of it. In Views bar,
pick Folders. Folder list appears to right, along with contents of
selected folder to right of that. Double click on File. Edit it. Opens
up full window right of Views Bar (covering Folder List and Conents).
Save and close file, Only Views Bar shown. Everything grey to right.

If I show Views Bar *and* then via Menu: View add the Folder List just
to it's right, then double click on file to open, it opens to right and
does not cover up the Folder list. Save and close, the Folder list is
still visible, with gray empty to right.

Just what I want. I don't want folder list to disapper. ONe needs to
put the folder list on the screen, and while clicking on Folders in View
Bar *appears* to do so, it does not.

All this with FP 2002.

Rob,

I am sorry, I thought we work talking about FP2000, not FP2002. I don't have
access to my machine that has FP2002/3 installed.

But in FP2000, under the View Menu I have both the View Bar and Folder List
selected, so I always see Views and the Folder List panels and I believe I
have FP2002 also setup in the same manner.

I think FP2000 has slightly different ways of doing all this than
FP2002. I used FP2000 and FP98 before that very extensively. I never
even had to think about having it work right. It just worked. I like
software that "just works". I prefer to think about other things when
using software.

Something has subtly changed with FP2002 and it wasn't obvious to me
(hence I had to ask). Have to put the Folder list on the View, and
doing it via View Bar not good enough.

IMHO turn off View Bars - & it takes up space & is worthless
Then from Menu select View Folder List, double click a page to open it (in page view)
(drag the Folder list pane separator left or right to your liking, double click folder to see pages in them)
For those rare times when you need Folder View, Select it from the View Menu

At 1280 x 1024 it not a issue to have it open.

I find it to be very handy have it available when I need to copy a group of
