How to make a XPe OS as close to XP SP2 as possiable

Jason

I'm using XPe SP2 and I'm not concerned about space. The reason I went with
XPe is basically licensing and deployment ease.

Is there a easy way to tell TA to build XPe with all the components that
you'd find in a XP Pro OS so I can get my XPe image/OS as close to a XP pro
OS???

Thanks

The nearest thing I know of is XP Pro Emulation by KM. This is available
from xpefiles.com http://www.xpefiles.com/viewtopic.php?t=109

Hi Jason,

The web site where you can purchase the XPe Supplemental Toolkit
http://www.sjjmicro.com/XPES.html including Sean Limings new book
includes at the bottom a link "CD Content: Exercises".

In this linked zip file you'll find in the subfolder "Components" an
"Full XPpro SP2.sld" component.

Jason,

One clarification, TA (Target Analyzer) is only used for finding HAL and
driver components on a target system.

Last time I checked the licensing for XPe explicitily prevents it from being
used as a direct substitute for XP pro. Has something changed?

The final device is not to be a regular PC that runs all PC applications
like Office, games, etc., but a single taksed device. You can create an OS
anyway you want to. It is possible to create an OS that is close to look and
feel of XP Pro.

But why create a fully functional OS for a device that is single tasked?
Seems mutually exclusive to me.

When trying to track down missing components for a smaller image, it helps
to varify that a full image will run the driver or application. Then just
removing components.

Two words: Feature Creep. :) Seriously, though, considering the amount
of messing about and testing that has to be done on a pared-down system,
when you're not short of space, a pro-emulation build can be the best
way to go.

Well, I'm not short of space, we are using 100 gig drives. XPe offers
better licensing then XP pro does, and the deployment is alot easier.

We only have one real app that gets installed onto these systems that is
developed in .Net. Even though it's one app, this app uses alot of code,
3rd party DLL that we need to control the PCI cards, or external devices.
We do alot with AFDX switching, IP and UPD communications. Since we are
still in the developmental stage there are alot of times, we have need some
functionality of the OS that I'm not aware. For instance, I created my
first image last year and all was great. A year later, we decide that we
need to be able to FTP from XPe, who know what we will need next month.
Also, these machines that have XPe on them, will also go onto our company
LAN, so I need all that functionality.

Instead of having a developer troubleshoot why he can't FTP and put the
blame on me and XPe I just assume to have the look and feel of XP Pro. Not
to mention that the number of people that will use these machines, will also
expect it to act like XP Pro, and I don't want people asking me why they can
do this on a XPe machine, but they can on XP Pro.

If it can be done on XP Pro, then I should be able to do it on XPe.
