How do I logon explicitly as
"administrator". in XP?

My file system is NTFS and when I install
certain new programs, they require me to
logon as administrator. (using Run as
administrator command does not seem to
help either)

If you have XP Home version you need to restart your computer into Safe
Mode. Do this by repeatedly pressing the F8 key when the computer first
starts. You'll get a Bootmenu screen and you can select Safe Mode from
there. At the log on screen select Administrator. Leave the password blank.
From there you should setup a new account that has Administrator privileges.
To do that go to Control Panel->User accounts->Create a new account. Ensure
this account is an Administrator account. Give it a password if you need to
prevent other users of your computer from easily accessing it.

After this account is created you can restart the computer and you will be
able to use that account when you want to.

Another option is to give the account you presently use Administrator
privileges. You can do that through Safe Mode as above then go into Control
Panel->User accounts->Change an account. The benefit is that you won't have
to switch to the Administrator account to install programs and make changes
etc. The downside is that you will have less security as anyone can mess
with your system.

By design, the only way to log into the Administrator account of
WinXP Home is to reboot into Safe Mode. For WinXP Pro, pressing
CTRL+ALT+DEL twice at the Welcome Screen will produce the standard
login dialog box.
