How to lighten videos

I have a couple of videos in AVI format that are underexposed. (Taken with a
digital camera with no extra lighting)
Is there a program that can lighten them either to display them or save them
brighter than they are?
I have tried some, but they can darken the video only, not lighten.
I am not expecting miracles, but I know that image processing programs can
lighten up still images considerably.
TIA

Check out an app called Virtualdub ( Pricelessware pages? ) - I had
exactly the same problem as you, this app did a fine job on the file.

Take a look at Virtualdub and add the brightness/contrast filter.
