Confused

The problem is that I did it before and it worked fine,
but this time, for some reason, setup stops half way
prompting the message "restart the computer".

I have two physical drives; 2000 OS with 2 partitions, and
another with XP and now, I want clean installation over
this old XP. So I start the CD (setup for XP) from the
current OS (2000 in this case), asks a few things and then
after asking for update files, then it gives me a message
that I have to restart the computer, and after I do it,
nothing happens as if the attempt to set the XP never
happend. ??? The last time I did it, it went smoothly
and even asked me which partition that I want to install
XP. Can anyone tell me what's with this?

If this is one of those mysterious behaviors of a
computer, could I just add this 2nd disk for multi-boot by
changin the boot.ini in 2000? I tried a few things with
boot.ini but the value that I had put must be wrong.
Didn't work. I checked for refrences on several sites,
but nothing (so far)really pinpoints my problem. Someone
help me!

I don't know the cause of your problem but I would probably
go about my multi-boot installation in a different way. I like
my operating systems to be completely independent and
completely invisible to each other.

I will now assume that Win2000 is installed on your primary
master disk, and that WinXP should go to a slave disk or to
the secondary master. Here is the recipe:

1. Disconnect the Win2000 disk.
2. Make the second disk the primary master.
3. Create a 15 GByte partition on it.
4. Install XOSL in this partition. It's free!
5. Install XP in the remaining partition.
6. Connect the Win2000 disk as a slave disk.
7. Add the two OSs to the XOSL menu.
8. Instruct XOSL to hide the two partitions
from each other.

This approach will solve your problem. It will
also avoid the known issue of the Win2000 boot files
(ntldr, ntdetect.com) being incompatible with the
WinXP versions.

Post again if you need further details on the above steps.

Hello,

I think it will work much better for you if you booted from the CD, and
started the installation that way. Then you will get the option to do a
fresh install on a partition you choose.
